A Strong Sense of Me
Runs: 18.01.2007 to 17.03.2007

A Strong Sense of Me is the outcome of the latest creative learning project by Places Matter! which was undertaken by children between the ages of 3 and 12 from the Stockport area.

The work on display here comes as product of the children’s visit to Stockport Marketplace, the town’s historic centre.  During this visit the children were encouraged to investigate and explore this atmospheric area, while at the same time taking photographs, drawing and recording their ideas about their surroundings.  Having formed both general impressions and detailed views of the environment around them the children were made to consider “what it means to belong to a place”.

Over the following weeks the children were introduced to the work of artists who have used a variety of media to record their own observations of people and places and to communicate their ideas.  With these examples in mind the children have created a series of 2D and 3D responses to the historic centre of Stockport Marketplace, and their role at the heart of it.

This project encompasses a large span of the curriculum, forcing the children to engage with history, geography and art, whilst also developing the communication skills of: observing, listening, analyzing, talking, writing and drawing.

Places Matter!

Places matter! is a CABE funded project delivered by RENEW Northwest and RIBA Northwest in association with CUBE.  The work of this outreach programme is fundamental to design and built environment education within the region’s schools.
