All is not what it appears to be!
Runs: 12.12.2003 to 28.02.2004

Press View: 5pm Thursday 11 December
Private View: 6pm Thursday 11 December

This exhibition brings together drawings, paintings, sculpture and sounds created by 8-9 year old children from St Mary's RC Primary School, Eccles, Salford. These are the outcome of a project in which children, parents and teachers worked with artists and architects to extend and enrich the learning experience outside the curriculum.

The project began with the children reading the story of the Wooden Horse of Troy and then exploring their experience of things being different from what they first appear to be. An integral part of this exploration involved a visit by the children to the Royal Exchange Theatre in Manchester in which they experienced a traditional building that is very different on the outside compared with the contemporary building contained within.

The artists and architects assisted the children in an exploration of the urban context of the Royal Exchange and the role of the theatre in the city. This experience introduced the children to the cultural diveristy on which cities were first founded and which continues to be fundamental to city life.

In planning and delivering this project the teachers and artists worked together with the staff of the Royal Exchange and Education@CUBE as part of the Urban Learning Programme recently established by CUBE. This programme promotes the use by teachers of a range of buildings in Manchester as places for creative learning in subjects of the curriulum not immediately associated with the function of the building.
