Juneau Projects, current exhibitors at Tate Britain select local artist as the winner for this year's CUBE Open CUBE is proud to be hosting its second open submission exhibition from the 2nd August to the 6th September. Juneau Projects along with Lucienne Cole and Kwong Lee (director of Castlefield Gallery) had a tough job choosing from more than 100 applicants. Fourteen artists were selected for this year's exhibition; the overall winner is local artist Andrea Booker who creates brightly coloured signs that aim to highlight our awareness of social conditioning. The artworks that will be exhibited offer differing meanings and parodies in relation to our own 'displacements' of identity conveyed through the urban landscape and architectural consequence. Andrea will be artist in residence at CUBE in 2009 and receive a bursary of £1,000 to support her practice. The artist says, "I am delighted to accept the residency it will give me the opportunity to continue my research and practice while having the support of CUBE." Other artists include Cath Campbell, Noel Clueit, Jo Lathwood, Vicki Thornton, Deirdre Feeney, David Gilroy, Chris Twigg, Julika Gittner, Eszter Takacs, Martene Rourke, Karen M Strom, Sarah Bayliss, David Wightman, David Theobald, Thomas O'Grady and Becky Hunt. Highlights include "Greensleeves" an animation by David Theobald which humorously depicts traffic congestion and Thomas O'Grady's video installation inspired by the Manchester Evening News. The exhibition preview is Friday 1st August 2008. For further information and images please contact Gemma or Fran on 0161 237 5525, or by email info@cube.org.uk
