Fusion
Using flight cases to transport a travelling show may be a tried and tested
idea. But adapting them to double as display cases is a novel one. This
time-saving and flexible solution forms the basis of Fusion, an exhibition
of industrial design work from Nicholas Grimshaw & Partners.
Fusion illustrates
Nicholas Grimshaw & Partners' enthusiasm for detailing from the initial
concept through to prototyping, testing and mass production, and features
relevant examples from buildings such as the International Terminal at
Waterloo, Printworks for the Financial Times and Western Morning News.
The exhibition itself
is contained within 18 purpose-designed flight cases which open to reveal
a combination of graphics, photographs and three dimensional components
and castings. Fusion covers projects developed in the context of architectural
work as well as new stand-alone products such as street furniture and
signage developed by the Industrial Design department, headed by Duncan
Jackson.
Through projects developed
with a number of UK and European manufacturers, Fusion demonstrates the
creative exchange of ideas between disciplines and the innovations that
this makes possible.
The exhibition provides
an insight into the production processes used to create anything from
a building skin to a bus shelter and will fascinate anybody interested
in design.
