4x4: Apartment Avant-Garde 4x4: Apartment Avant-Garde Britains first fully interactive DVD architecture exhibition aims to present layers of Japanese culture, to reveal real actual lives of younger Japanese architects (30 to 50 years old), and the urban conditions in which they live and operate. The exhibition is being shown simultaneously at four UK venues: Cube, RIBA Architecture Gallery, Bristol Architecture Centre and the Lighthouse. Sixteen of Japans leading architects were invited to present their own work through specially commissioned recordings of their individual homes and workspaces. Traditional Japanese tatami mats cover the gallery floor and visitors are invited to remove their shoes, sit down and interact with the DVD recordings on individual monitors using Sony Playstation 2s. The architects in
the exhibition include: Shigeru Ban, famous for his paper tube
structures and projects such as his Case Study House 10, in which four
personal rooms move around on castors; Kengo Kuma, co-curator of the exhibition,
who designed the amazing Water/Glass House at Atami; Masaharu Takasaki,
whose buildings such as his Kihoku Astronomical Museum, display extraordinary
morphologies and Kazuyo Sejima, whose recent work includes her exquisite
Small House in Tokyo. The sixteen architects featured in the exhibition are:
