THE LOWRY CENTRE, SALFORD QUAYS
Northwest Development Agency
The Lowry Centre, Salford Quays Michael Wilford & Partners
The NWDA was one of many in a public sector partnership to bring forward this striking regional centre for the visual and performing arts, designated a Landmark Millennium Project for the Arts. Michael Wilford & Partners has designed a striking Post-modern building with a classical flavour and strong symmetrical planning. The building has a nautical feel with the cladding of angled steel shingles suggesting movement. A huge circular funnel, with open lattice work at the top and clad in semitransparent guaze, anchors the building on the landward side beside a blocky entrance canopy.
The project was more than a one off building; it has led to the regeneration of the whole of Pier 8 which has include the creation of a public plaza, a new footbridge which links the Lowry with the wharfside area of Trafford Park and in particular the Imperial War Museum North.
The NWDA has contributed £9.9million towards a total public sector investment of £110million. In terms of its economic impact, The Lowry within the wider context of Salford Quays, has been significant and has pump primed major regeneration by the private sector. The Lowry Centre and Imperial War Museum are a testament to the role that architectural innovation and excellence can play in delivering the region’s urban renaissance.
