Grade II Listed

There are many examples of Grade II listed structures within the city of Manchester. The magnificent Palace Hotel (formally the Refuge Assurance building) on Oxford Road, is clad with imperishable pressed brick and dark red terracotta. Nearby, Oxford Road station (1960) is arguably one of the most remarkable and unusual train stations in the UK; two reasons, the first, its unique architectural form, and secondly, the use of timber shell technology. The Royal Exchange has a grand classical Edwardian exterior, which houses the theatre pod by Levitt Bernstein (1976). On a more reflective note, the white Portland stone Cenotaph (1924) by Sir Edwin Lutyens is a reminder of the true cost of warfare.
