INTRODUCTION
Building a New Future on a Strong Legacy CUBE (Centre for the Urban Built Environment) is an architecture centre and a member of the Architecture Centre Network. Located in the city centre of Manchester on Portland Street, it occupies a 500m2 gallery and seminar space. Our remit is to create and promote understanding of the built environment through activities including exhibitions, events, debates, educational projects and publications. What is an Architecture Centre? An Architecture Centre works for the creation of better quality neighbourhoods, buildings and public spaces across the UK. They achieve this through:
- Participation: enabling real public engagement in architecture, the built environment and the public realm;
- Advocacy: promoting the case for architecture and design of the highest quality;
- Education: developing a greater public understanding of architecture, design and the public space.
We programme around 8 exhibitions per year of national and international significance, plus supplementary exhibitions in partnership with organisations such as RIBA Competitions and the Manchester Society of Architects. We also support emerging talent and are proud to exhibit work from the regions art, architecture and design degree shows. CUBE, Manchester’s Architecture Centre, was re-launched in May 2005 under new management and with an exciting new programme of built environment led exhibitions, events and discussions. CUBE’s new advisory board, made up of RENEW Norhwest, RIBA, the North West Regional Development Agency, the Centre for Construction Innovation, Manchester City Council and the University of Salford, has secured the future operation of the Centre and has appointed a new management team. Phil Barton, Director RENEW Northwest, comments “Driving up the quality of the region’s design and built environment is critical to economic and social regeneration and to tackling climate change. We look forward to working with CUBE to inspire and inform professionals and the public alike at this unique venue at the heart of the city ”
With emphasis on professional development as well as the integration of the public, CUBE will continue to explore the issues and ideas surrounding constructed environs of the ‘city’ through a dynamic programme of exhibitions and series of supporting talks and seminars. CUBE will continue to focus on offering a stimulating programme of events targeted at both the architectural and artistic community and the general public. CUBE wants to continue its vision to be a vibrant hub and meeting place for the creative community both locally, nationally and internationally. CUBE 113 - 115 Portland Street Manchester M1 6DW
